7 Layer Dip is one of those dips that everyone loves. It is perfect for parties, for watching sports, and even perfect to serve alongside your favorite Mexican dinner (like these Southwest Egg Rolls!)
I love that it is so easy to make, and that I doesn’t need to be heated. So it makes the perfect appetizer to bring along when you don’t want to worry about having to heat something up.
Serve it up with some tortilla chips, and watch it disappear!
Ingredients
Scroll down to the recipe card at the end of the post for full amounts and instructions.
- Cream Cheese: Make sure the cream cheese is at room temperature to ensure that it mixes easily.
- Sour Cream: I have only ever used full fat, but low fat will work just fine in this recipe.
- Taco Seasoning: You can use store bought or homemade taco seasoning.
- Refried Beans: You could use homemade refried beans, but I usually use canned because they tend to be a lot thicker and make the bottom layer a lot easier.
- Guacamole: I like to just mash up a few avocados and mix in some garlic, cilantro, and lime juice. But feel free to use store bought if you prefer.
- Cheddar Cheese: I will always finely grate my cheese for this recipe. I don’t know why, but it just makes it so much better!
- Tomatoes: You will need 2-3 roma tomatoes, or 1-2 regular tomatoes. You want enough to cover the top in a generous layer.
- Olives: Make sure to drain your olives first.
- Green Onions: Your last layer is the green onions. I will use 2 to 3, depending on their size.
How to Make 7 Layer Dip
The only prep step (unless you are making your beans or guacamole) is to make the cream layer. Start by beating the cream cheese until it is light and fluffy. Then mix in the sour cream and the taco seasoning.
Now it is time to layer! I start with the beans, then the cream cheese layer. Top that with the guacamole, cheese, tomatoes, olives, and then green onions.
Tips and Tricks
For best results, you’ll want to refrigerate this for a couple of hours. You can technically eat it right as soon as you layer everything together, but it’s best when it’s had a little bit of time to set up.
Feel free to change around the order of the layers. I always start with the beans because they are harder to spread out, so they go well on the bottom.
Instead of tomatoes, you can add a layer of your favorite salsa. I would put it below the cheese if you decide to do salsa.
This 7 layer dip is a great make ahead appetizer. Make it the day before and cover it tightly and refrigerate it until you are ready to serve.
