We officially have summer fever here at the Taste and Tell household. We have made the summer bucket list, have been trying to plan a few small getaways, and have been sleeping in and staying up late. I know we are only a couple weeks into summer break, but it sure does feel good to relax a little bit!
One of my favorite things to do in the summer is to spend the evenings al fresco, dining and cooking in the backyard. The sun is a little too direct and hot with our current setup right now to sit outside when it’s dinnertime (I’m working on a solution to that) but I cannot stop grilling. Ok, the truth is that I love to grill year round, but once the weather gets warmer, that’s all I want to do!!
As much as I love mustard on a hot dog or on a ham sandwich, I’m here to show you today that mustard goes way beyond the ordinary. Today, I’m bringing you wings. Grilled wings. With a touch of sweet and a touch of spice.
Ingredients
*NOTE: The original post and recipe was part of a sponsored partnership, but French’s no longer makes this particular product. The recipe has been adjusted to be made without the special mustard.*
Maple Syrup: You’ll want to use pure maple syrup, not pancake syrup.
Mustard: Just regular yellow mustard!
Soy Sauce: The soy sauce brings in lots of flavor.
Worcestershire Sauce: This will bring some depth to the flavor.
Cayenne Pepper: Here is where you get the spice. A little goes a long way, so I just add a pinch, but you can add more to taste.
Wings: Sometimes, the wings need to be cut apart into the drumettes and the wingettes. If you can find them separated, that just makes it easier!
Dipping Sauce: You’ll make a simple dipping sauce from mayonnaise, mustard, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper.
Tips and Tricks
I was really intimidated with grilling wings the first time I tried them, but they are so super simple, and grill up in about 25 minutes. Just make sure you keep a lookout for any hot spots, because the wings can get over-charred in just a moment.
Once the wings are grilled, you’ll coat them in even more of the sauce that you have reduced and thickened just slightly. So make sure to separate the sauce in half before you start grilling.
You don’t have to make the dipping sauce, but we love to dip, and I love that this sauce has so many of the flavors that are in the wings, as well.

Maple Mustard Grilled Chicken Wings
Ingredients
Wings
- 1/2 cup pure maple syrup
- 1/4 cup prepared yellow mustard
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- dash of Worcestershire sauce
- pinch of cayenne pepper
- 5 lbs chicken wings separated at the joint, tips removed
- salt and pepper
- chopped chives
Maple Mustard Dipping Sauce
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1/4 cup prepared yellow mustard
- 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
- pinch of cayenne pepper
Instructions
- Lightly grease a grill with vegetable oil, then preheat to medium heat. In a bowl, whisk together the maple syrup, mustard, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and cayenne pepper. Pour half of the sauce into a microwave safe bowl.
- Season the wings with salt and pepper. Place the wings on the grill in a single layer. Cook for 10 minutes, turning halfway through.
- Using the small bowl of sauce, brush the wings with half of the sauce. Grill for 10 more minutes, then flip and brush with the remaining sauce. Continue to grill for another 5 minutes, or until the wings are cooked through.
- Meanwhile, microwave the remaining sauce until slightly thickened, a minute or two. Alternately, pour the sauce into a small saucepan and cook, just until slightly thickened.
- In a small bowl, combine the ingredients for the dipping sauce. Refrigerate until needed.
- Once the wings are cooked, place in a large bowl. Pour the thickened sauce over the wings and toss to coat. Serve topped with the chives and with the dipping sauce.

Wow. These look amazing. I can’t wait to try them. I’ll probably have to make 2 versions of the sauce as my wife isnt as keen on mustard as I am though!

Oh I never would’ve guessed to pair maple and mustard together! Love chicken wings and can’t wait to try these.

Oh what I wouldn’t do for access to a grill! And some of that maple mustard sauce to slather on ALL THE THINGS.
Brooks @ RecipeBoy says
The grilling on these wings is absolutely perfect! I feel like I could eat fifty of these. And I would have done the same thing with the mustard… Little sweet, little spicy.

I find myself grilling almost every night during the summer, and now I have another recipe I need to add to my “must try” list. These look great, Deb!

I am a mustard FIEND! Have never seen either of those varieties, and now I am off in search of them. Totally agree that you can never have too many mustard jars in the refridge.

Perfect party wings! Love the glaze, and I’m a huge mustard-lover. This may be on our menu for Fourth of July! 🙂
Liz @ The Lemon Bowl says
This is funny but I can’t eat chicken without dipping it in yellow mustard!! And now my boys are the same – it’s cute!! These look so good!

Hi
Is there another way to make these wings, I do not have a grill.
Deborah says
You should be able to broil them in the oven instead of grilling. 🙂
Jackie says
Hi Deb
Do I follow the same cooking directions for broiling the chicken wings.
Deborah says
Hi Jackie, I’m guessing it would take the same amount of time to broil them, but since I haven’t tried, I can’t say for sure. Just keep an eye on them to make sure they don’t burn.
