We are heading right into the time of year when there are parties and potlucks galore. I love the holiday season, but I also love keeping things simple. That is why I like to keep a handful of easy recipes on hand that are perfect for a party.
And this Easy Crab Dip Recipe is one of those recipes.
There are a few reasons I really love this crab dip recipe for a party.
- It feeds a crowd. This recipe makes a big bowl of dip. If you are making it for a smaller gathering, it will half easily, but it’s so good that you’ll probably want to make the full recipe anyway.
- It’s a cold dip recipe. I love a good hot dip, but hot dips are not always ideal for parties or potlucks. You don’t always know if the host has an available oven, and you don’t want to have to worry about keeping it warm.
- It’s easy. All you have to do is stir together your ingredients and then let it chill in the refrigerator!
Ingredients in this Easy Crab Dip Recipe
This crab dip only has a few simple ingredients:
- lump crab meat – this comes in a can. I like to use the lump crab meat because it comes in larger pieces. You could also use fresh crab, if desired, but it will be more expensive. And the canned crab works perfectly well, in my opinion.
- mayonnaise – I have only tried this with regular mayonnaise, not low fat.
- sour cream – The sour cream makes everything super creamy.
- red onion – if you don’t like raw onion, you might want to cut back on this just a little bit. But I use a red onion because it’s a little less harsh and I love the flavor that it brings.
- fresh dill – I really do think you need the fresh dill for this recipe, simply because it brings a great flavor. But if you can’t get fresh, you can sub in 2 teaspoons of dried dill.
- lemon zest and juice – this will bring some great freshness.
- hot sauce – you could technically leave this out, but I loved the little hint of heat.
How to Make Crab Dip
This recipe doesn’t even need instructions. All you do is simply stir everything together. You do need some time to refrigerate teh dip, though. You will want to refrigerate it at least 2 hours, but longer is better.
Can You Make Crab Dip Ahead of Time?
Yes! In fact, you need to make it ahead, as I discussed above. Just keep it covered in the refrigerator. It should last 2-3 days in the refrigerator.

Easy Crab Dip Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 (6 oz each) cans lump crab meat drained and flaked
- 1 cup mayonnaise
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1/4 cup minced red onion
- 2 tablespoons minced fresh dill
- 2 teaspoons lemon zest
- 2 teaspoons lemon juice
- A few dashes of hot sauce
- Salt and pepper
- Assorted crackers for serving
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, combine the crab meat, mayonnaise, sour cream, red onion, dill, lemon zest and juice, and hot sauce. Stir to combine. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
- Transfer the dip to a serving bowl, cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight.
- Serve with assorted crackers.
