Sometimes you need a drink that will warm you from the inside out. And this Mexican Hot Chocolate does just that.
Filled with lots of chocolate flavor, plus a hint of cinnamon and spice. this hot chocolate recipe is just what you need. And it’s perfect because it makes 1-2 servings, so you can make up a batch whenever the chocolate craving hits.
Ingredients
- Milk: This hot chocolate is pretty rich, so I just use 2% milk. You could make it even richer by using whole milk, or even half and half.
- Chocolate: I used a dark chocolate bar from Trader Joe’s. It doesn’t list a percentage on it, but just from taste, it’s not super dark. You could use a really dark, or even bittersweet chocolate, but you’d probably won’t to add more sugar.
- Sugar: This is just to sweeten the hot hot chocolate.
- Cocoa Powder: For even more chocolate flavor!
- Cinnamon: The cinnamon really makes this drink, in my opinion. It seems like a lot, but I think the cinnamon flavor ends up being perfect.
- Chile Powder and Cayenne Pepper: These are your secret ingredients! On my palate, you can’t really taste the spice, but it hits the back of your tongue for a unique experience. I’m totally a fan. I get that it’s not for everyone though, so if it’s not your thing, you can leave them out.
- Vanilla Extract: This gives a little bit of extra flavor. Bonus if you have Mexican vanilla!
How to Make Mexican Hot Chocolate
STEP 1: Combine all of the ingredients except the vanilla extract in a small pan. Set over medium heat and cook, stirring often, until the chocolate is melted.
STEP 2: Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Serve warm.
Tips and Tricks
- I like to serve this with homemade whipped cream.
- You can also add a cinnamon stick. It will add some extra cinnamon flavor as it sits in the hot chocolate.
- This can also be made ahead of time and then just reheated when needed. You will want to make sure it is well mixed, though, as there will be some settling.
- Feel free to double or triple the recipe if you are serving more people.
