Next time you are making up a batch of Coney Island Hot Dogs or Reuben Dogs, try this Air Fryer method to cook the hot dogs!
I have been a hot dog fan for a long time. And my top 2 ways to cook a hot dog have always been over an open fire, and on the grill.
But I only camp a couple of times a year, and a grill is not always accessible.
So for years, I’ve just boiled my hot dogs when we are eating hot dogs. It’s never really been a favorite way to heat them, but it is fast, easy, and can be done at any time.
But now I don’t know if I’ll ever boil a hot dog again. Because I have a new favorite:
Air Fryer Hot Dogs.
I’m not kidding – these are right up there with campfire roasted hot dogs. They get nice and crispy on the outside, and are heated through and juicy. And one of the other best parts? They only take 8 minutes to make!
Ingredients
- Hot Dogs: You can really use any hot dog here. I like to use a good, all beef hot dog. (The ones from Costco are my favorite.)
- Buns: You want a good, soft hot dog bun. I don’t get too picky, but I do like for them to be soft.
How to Make Air Fryer Hot Dogs
PHOTO 1: Start by scoring your hot dogs. You do this by taking a knife and making several shallow slits in the hot dog. I like to cut them diagonal, and add 9-12 slashes to each dog.
PHOTO 2: Place the hot dogs in your air fryer basket. I don’t spray it or anything – just place them right in, giving some space between each dog.
PHOTO 3: Cook the hot dogs on 400ºF for 6 minutes. If I remember, I like to shake the basket halfway through the cook time, but I have forgotten to do this many times and they turn out just fine.
PHOTO 4: Once the hot dogs are cooked, remove them with tongs to the buns. Then place the hot dogs in the buns right back into the basket. Cook this for 2 minutes more, to soften the bun and add a bit of toasty texture to the edges.

Tips and Tricks
Scoring the hot dogs is not required, but it gives the hot dogs some nice, crispy edges. And I feel like they cook more evenly when they are cut.
You can for sure make more or less than 4 servings. I can only really fit 4 buns in my air fryer, so I cook them 4 at a time when I’m making them for the whole family. But I’ve also made just one as a lunch serving before, too!
I don’t preheat my air fryer before cooking the hot dogs. I’ve never really had a problem just adding them cold and then cooking. You could preheat if you want to, but when I want fast and easy, I don’t want to have to wait for an appliance to heat up.

Air Fryer Hot Dogs
Ingredients
- 4 hot dogs
- 4 hot dog buns
Instructions
- Take each hot dog and make several shallow slashes down each. I like to 3 diagonal slashes, rotate the hot dog, slash 3 times again, then rotate again. I will usually rotate 3 to 4 times, making each hot dog have 9-12 diagonal slashes.
- Place the hot dogs in your air fryer basket. Set the temperature to 400ºF and set the timer for 6 minutes.*
- Once the hot dogs are done cooking, remove the hot dogs and place them in the buns. Place the hot dogs in the buns back into the air fryer and cook for 2 more minutes at 400ºF.
- Remove and top with your favorite hot dog toppings.
