Jazz up that fruit salad recipe with this Apple Pomegranate Salad that has sweetened whipped cream with apples, marshmallows, and lots of fresh pomegranate seeds.
Are you one of those people who plan holiday menus out weeks in advance? I’m really hoping you’re not, because I’ve got a fabulous fruit salad that belongs on your Christmas dinner table to share with you today!!
We keep things pretty traditional on Christmas – at least traditional for us. My mom’s birthday is on Christmas Eve, so we don’t do our big meal on Christmas Eve, but on Christmas day, after the excitement of the morning has worn down a bit. We usually do ham (although my mom is doing a ham and a turkey this year), and then the typical fixings – potatoes, veggies, salad, rolls, etc. But even though it’s pretty much the same thing every year, we still didn’t even have assignments down until yesterday. We spent the morning texting and deciding what we all wanted to bring.
Ever since I can remember, there has been a fruit salad that has graced our Thanksgiving and Christmas tables. And sometimes Easter. We affectionately call it the “Goodman Fruit Salad” because it originated on my mom’s side of the family. It is whipped cream with apples, bananas, marshmallows and nuts stirred into it. It is a fixture on our holiday table.
So when I came across this Apple Pomegranate Salad recipe, that Goodman fruit salad immediately came to mind. This is very similar – but instead of bananas, you get pomegranate seeds. The recipe in the cookbook didn’t have marshmallows, either, but I just had to do it. If you aren’t a fan of marshmallows in your fruit salad, then we can’t be friends then just leave them out. But if you’ve never tried it, you have to at least once before you write it off.
I know many of you may laugh about this being called a “salad”, but this just screams holiday meal to me. And I can’t wait to celebrate Christmas this year with this version of my mom’s fruit salad!

Dixie Salad (chopped apples, pomegranate seeds, chopped pecans, whipped cream) has been a family holiday tradition for years. It is one of the few things that I go back for more of!
