If you know me, you know I’m all about the simple.
I love to cook, and I love to be in the kitchen, but simple is where it’s at for me.
And it doesn’t get any simpler than these Bacon Wrapped Smokies. Only 3 ingredients. Less than an hour. And you should have seen how fast my family devoured these.
Whether you are looking for an appetizer for a party or for game day, these Bacon Wrapped Smokies are your answer!
Ingredients
- Bacon: I use just regular sliced bacon. You could probably use thick cut bacon, but I think the bacon to sausage ratio is perfect with the regular bacon.
- Lit’l Smokies: These are simply fully cooked sausage links. You’ll need a 14 oz package, which holds about 32 sausages.
- Brown Sugar: The brown sugar will bring it all together for the perfect sweet and salty appetizer.
How to Make Bacon Wrapped Smokies
- Cut each slice of bacon into thirds.
- Using one piece of the bacon, wrap it around one of the sausages and secure with a toothpick.
- Place the bacon wrapped sausages in a baking dish.
- Sprinkle the brown sugar evenly over the top of the sausages.
- Bake until the bacon is crisp. Serve warm.
Make Ahead Instructions
If you are wanting to make these Bacon Wrapped Smokies for a party or event, you can save some time by wrapping the sausages in the bacon ahead of time.
I would assemble the bacon wrapped sausages in the baking dish and cover it with foil and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Let the dish sit at room temperature for about 20-30 minutes before baking. Add the brown sugar just before baking.
Tips and Tricks
I like to cut the bacon into thirds because each slice fits just around the smokie, with just a bit to overlap and secure with the toothpick. If you wrap too much bacon on the sausage, it won’t get as crisp and will take longer to cook through.
You want to serve these warm. Once they cool off, the sugar will become pretty sticky.
You can serve the smokies with or without the toothpicks. I like to keep them in to make them more of a finger food. You can also bake the smokies without the toothpick – just place the overlap on the bottom so that they don’t come apart.
