This makes enough to feed lots of people, but if you are just wanting a sweet treat at home, this can easily be cut in half. But trust me – it’s so good that you’ll want to make the full recipe so that you can have some now and save some for later!
Ingredients
Cream Cheese: I have only ever made this using regular cream cheese, but low fat cream cheese should work just fine.
Brown Sugar: The brown sugar will add some of that caramel flavor.
Vanilla Extract: I like to use pure vanilla extract.
Mini Chocolate Chips: Using mini chocolate chips is key, here. Regular sized chocolate chips will be too big. If you don’t have mini chocolate chips, I would suggest roughly chopping some chocolate or chopping the regular sized chocolate chips.
Caramel Topping: For ease, you can use store bought caramel sauce. I usually use Mrs. Richardson’s Caramel (which is more like an ice cream topping), but the caramel dip you can find in the produce section, like the Litehouse Caramel Dip, also works great. If you want to take it up a level, you can make your own Salted Caramel Sauce.
Heath Bars: I think this is best when you buy Heath bars and chop them yourself, but you can always use the milk chocolate toffee bits (basically Heath bars already chopped up). I like the chocolate on them, but you could also use the bits o’ brickle that don’t have the chocolate.
Apples: I like to use a mixture of sweet and tart apples, but you can definitely use any apples you love!
How to Make Caramel Apple Dip
1: Beat the cream cheese until it is smooth and creamy. This is easiest if you let it sit out for about 30 minutes beforehand.
2: Mix in the brown sugar and vanilla, then stir in the chocolate chips.
3: Spread this mixture into your serving dish. It fits perfectly in a 9-inch pie dish, but any shallow serving dish about the same size will work.
4: Spread the caramel on top.
5: Sprinkle the chopped Heath bars on top of the caramel.
6: Slice your apples for serving.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes! While apples will always be my favorite, it is also delicious with small cookies, vanilla wafers, or pretzels.
If you want to make this ahead of time, I suggest making it up until you add the caramel, then refrigerate it until needed. I like to add the Heath pieces last minute so they are still crunchy. They will soften up a bit if it is refrigerated with the Heath bits on top.
Simply cover the dish with a lid or plastic wrap and refrigerate. Like I mentioned above, the candy bar pieces may get soft, but even so, the leftovers are still delicious!
