If you are a regular around here, you know that muffins are a regular occurrence. from Brown Sugar Muffins to Oatmeal Raisin Muffins and beyond, you can expect a batch of muffins on the table multiple times a month.
When I’m craving something a little more indulgent, I like to make these Sour Cream Muffins with Chocolate Chips. I have a basil Chocolate Chip Muffin recipe, but these are a little more indulgent.
They are super moist, buttery, and filled with chocolate-y goodness. The sour cream gives these muffins an amazing texture. They are almost taste more like dessert than breakfast, but you’ll never hear me complain!
This is a recipe you’ll want to whip up for a special breakfast this weekend!
Ingredients
- Flour: I have only tested this recipe with all-purpose flour.
- Sugar: This is granulated sugar.
- Baking Powder & Baking Soda: This recipe uses both baking powder and baking soda for it’s life and structure.
- Salt: This will help to balance the flavors.
- Egg: The egg provides structure, fat, and flavor.
- Sour Cream: The sour cream gives these muffins the perfect, moist texture. I have only tested them using full fat sour cream, but I do think you could use low-fat.
- Butter: You want to melt the butter and let it cool slightly before adding it.
- Vanilla: This is for flavor.
- Chocolate Chips: I like to use seme-sweet chocolate chips.
How to Make Sour Cream Muffins with Chocolate Chips
STEP 1: Place all of the dry ingredients in a large bowl. Whisk them to combine.
STEP 2: In another bowl, mix together the wet ingredients. This doesn’t need to be perfectly smooth, but you do want it all mixed together.
STEP 3: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Start to mix, but just mix until moistened.
STEP 4: Add in the chocolate chips and continue to mix until you don’t have any dry patches left. The dough is pretty thick and sticky.
STEP 5: Divide the batter between 12 prepared muffin cups. If desired, you can add a few extra chocolate chips to the tops of the muffins.
STEP 6: Bake the muffins until a tester inserted in the middle comes out clean.
Tips and Tricks
Make sure you don’t overmix the batter. That is why you don’t mix the batter completely before adding the chocolate chips – you want to try to mix as little as possible.
Switch things up and add white chocolate chips, or cinnamon chips instead of chocolate chips.
Store these muffins at room temperature in a container with a lid. They will last several days, but will start to get sticky on the tops.

I just love muffins too. They are handsdown my favorite thing to bake- there are endless combinations out there, and they can be both breakfast or dessert. And I don’t know what it is about muffins, but my 3 year old who never has a very big appetite will scarf down muffins one after another.
