This is a recipe you’ll want to whip up for a special breakfast this weekend!
Ingredients
- Flour: I have only tested this recipe with all-purpose flour.
- Sugar: This is granulated sugar.
- Baking Powder & Baking Soda: This recipe uses both baking powder and baking soda for it’s life and structure.
- Salt: This will help to balance the flavors.
- Egg: The egg provides structure, fat, and flavor.
- Sour Cream: The sour cream gives these muffins the perfect, moist texture. I have only tested them using full fat sour cream, but I do think you could use low-fat.
- Butter: You want to melt the butter and let it cool slightly before adding it.
- Vanilla: This is for flavor.
- Chocolate Chips: I like to use seme-sweet chocolate chips.
How to Make Sour Cream Muffins with Chocolate Chips
STEP 1: Place all of the dry ingredients in a large bowl. Whisk them to combine.
STEP 2: In another bowl, mix together the wet ingredients. This doesn’t need to be perfectly smooth, but you do want it all mixed together.
STEP 3: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Start to mix, but just mix until moistened.
STEP 4: Add in the chocolate chips and continue to mix until you don’t have any dry patches left. The dough is pretty thick and sticky.
STEP 5: Divide the batter between 12 prepared muffin cups. If desired, you can add a few extra chocolate chips to the tops of the muffins.
STEP 6: Bake the muffins until a tester inserted in the middle comes out clean.
Tips and Tricks
Make sure you don’t overmix the batter. That is why you don’t mix the batter completely before adding the chocolate chips – you want to try to mix as little as possible.
Switch things up and add white chocolate chips, or cinnamon chips instead of chocolate chips.
Store these muffins at room temperature in a container with a lid. They will last several days, but will start to get sticky on the tops.

I am at the cabin and was looking for an easy muffin recipe! I found this one and thought, I gotta try this! Unfortunately I only had only 1/2 cup sour cream. So I used a mixture of sour cream and vanilla yogurt. So omitted the vanilla. I also didn’t have chocolate chips, so I chopped up a dark chocolate bar. The result was fantabulous! Thanks for the recipe!

These muffins are delish. Moist and chocolatey.
I stuck a piece of Caramilk bar in centre of each muffin so that there is some caramel goodness oozing out when you bite into centre of muffin. Fabulous!

These were good. I used a wire whisk and didn’t even have to get out my electric beater. They are low fiber but that’s perfect for my son who can’t tolerate a lot of fiber. He loved them. Quick and easy. I’ll hang on to this recipe.
