Perfect for a cookie lover, this Cookies and Cream Cake tastes like an Oreo – in cake form! A cookie flavored cake is filled and topped with a vanilla buttercream that is reminiscent of Oreo filling.
When you make a recipe from an online source where people can leave reviews of the recipe, do you usually read them?? I love to skim through them for some helpful tips – especially if adding one thing or changing another thing make the recipe better. But sometimes I just really like to read through them because they make me laugh. Like when someone bashes on a recipe, but then says all of the changes they made to the recipe, which basically completely changed it. Or when an important ingredient is substituted – like using brown sugar instead of white sugar, which totally changes the recipe.
Well, when you read the title for this recipe – Cookies ‘n Cream Cake, and see that one of the ingredients is chocolate sandwich cookies – aka Oreos – wouldn’t you have some sort of an idea that this cake just may taste like Oreos?? I had to laugh when one reviewer complained because it tasted like the middle of an Oreo cookie. Not quite sure what they were expecting!!
That being said – this icing does taste a lot like the filling of an Oreo cookie. I found it a bit too sweet for my taste, but I often feel like that about frostings. But this was a huge hit with the kids I served this to, and it was a beautiful cake!! Do be aware, though, that the frosting does have raw egg whites in it, so if you are paranoid about that, you may want to skip this frosting recipe.
Cookies and Cream Cake
Ingredients
- 1 18.25 ounce package white cake mix
- 1 1/4 cups water
- 1/3 cup vegetable oil
- 3 egg whites
- 2 cups chocolate sandwich cookie crumbs
- 3 cups confectioners’ sugar
- 3/4 cup shortening
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 egg whites
- 12 chocolate sandwich cookies
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, mix the cake mix, water, oil and 3 egg whites with an electric mixer on high speed for 2 minutes. Gently stir in crushed cookies. Pour batter into the prepared pans.
- Bake for 25 to 35 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the middle of the cake comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes in pans. Remove from pans, and completely cool on racks.
- To make frosting: In a small bowl, thoroughly blend the 1/2 cup confectioners sugar, shortening, vanilla, and 2 egg whites. Beat in remaining confectioners sugar until creamy. Frost the cake and garnish with the remaining cookies.

I love how delicious the cake looks, Deborah! When you started the post by talking about how you check recipe reviews, I began to think how I do that at Allrecipes. And right enough, the recipe turned out to be from Allrecipes! hehe

What a beautiful cake! I always read reviews for recipes I'm going to make and usually find them really helpful. That's funny that someone complained about this cake tasting like the inside of an oreo haha.
Maria says
I love black and white. Great job on this cake!

i was just thinking about something like this because i was in a park over the weekend and saw an ice cream guy selling those oreo ice cream bars, the ones with crushed oreos on the outside. i was drooling over the thought of them, and so my girlfriend bought me one. then i was thinking about what I could bake with oreos in it or on it… this fits the bill.

I do enjoy reading reviews for the same reasons :)!! I think most folks would like it tasting like oreo filling, lol, so I laughed when you mentioned what they said. I'm usually the kind of person that takes off a lot of frosting…but I might have to reconsider if it tastes like oreos :).
Abby says
It would be a hit at work, too. Similar to feeding children for some reason. HA.

I know what you mean about people who review recipes. I find it especially true on websites. I think if you have something constructive to say then it's all good. But, if you just say "I don't like it", then it really doesn't help anyone. Anyway, I pretty much like everything, so you'll never hear me say the opposite. This cake is fabulous!! I made a different version awhile back and the kids and adults devoured it! It certainly is a looker : )
Ingrid says
I bet it was good, even better than the version I made which was a chocolate cake.
Yeah, I think it's crazy when they bash the recipe after they've totally altered it.

Deb, some people are just crazy. 😀
Some comments are really useful – I cut back the salt in a cake because of the comments on Martha's website – but some are just b.s.
Your cake looks so beautiful! I'm in for anything Oreos.
Grace says
well, considering that i'm one of those folks who lick the middle of the oreo and look for someone else to consume the rest, i suspect that i'd love this frosting. the cake wouldn't hurt going down, either.

I love anything cookies & creme, so I think I'll try this out. If anyone's concerned about the eggs, they should used a pasteurized egg like Davidson's.

That IS a good-looker!
I, too, find it funny to read recipe reviews for the same reasons you mentioned! (Get a clue, people.) 😉

I always read those reviews online but take them with a grain of salt just like you said. often though people have really good suggestions.

Fun cake. And I hope it indeed tastes like oreo cookies! 😉

I've read some great online reviews in my time, too! The cake looks fabulous.
