These Toffee Peanuts would not only go perfectly on any holiday gift tray, but they are the perfect snack to make year round!
And they only take a few ingredients, and not very much time. You’ll wonder why you’ve spent so much money on store bought versions in the past!
Ingredients
- Sugar: You need granulated sugar.
- Butter: I use unsalted butter.
- Corn Syrup: This is important to help to prevent the sugar from crystallizing.
- Cinnamon and Nutmeg: These are both for flavor. The finished nuts don’t taste like cinnamon peanuts, but they do bring a good flavor in the background.
- Salt: The salt is important to balance the sweetness.
- Peanuts: You can use salted or unsalted peanuts. I love the sweet/salty combination, so I always use salted peanuts.
How to Make Toffee Peanuts
Note: This is just an overview of the recipe. Please go down to the recipe card for the full recipe.
STEP 1: Combine the sugar, butter, and cornstarch in a large pan. Cook it over medium heat until the butter melts, then bring it to a boil. Boil for 1 minute, then remove from the heat and stir in the cinnamon, nutmeg, and the salt.
STEP 2: Stir in the peanuts. It may start to clump up a little – that’s ok.
STEP 3: Spread the peanuts out on a foil lined baking sheet. DO NOT touch the peanuts – they are extremely hot. Use a spatula to spread them out as well as you can.
STEP 4: Bake at 325ºF for about 20 minutes, stirring once every 5 minutes. The sugar mixture will start to melt and spread out – this is what it is supposed to do.
Once golden brown, remove from the oven. Let the peanuts sit until completely cooled, then bread into small pieces.
Tips and Tricks
If you want bigger clumps, stir the peanuts once last time when you take them out of the oven so that they aren’t in as flat of a layer on the baking sheet.
You can really substitute in any of your favorite nuts and the instructions and amounts should be the same.
Store the toffee peanuts in an airtight container at room temperature.
