When it comes to potlucks, I feel like I have my favorites. Recipes that I know will always be a hit.
Bow Tie Pasta Salad, Funeral Potatoes, Broccoli Salad and Homemade Brownies, just to name a few.
And this Baked Beans recipe.
The best part about this recipe (except the fact that they are just delicious) is how easy they are. Only about 15 minutes of prep time, then they go into the oven. You may just want to make a double batch, because they really are that good!
INGREDIENTS
Making these baked beans only takes a few ingredients:
- Bacon
- Onion
- Pork and Beans
- Molasses
- Light Brown Sugar
- Ketchup
- Mustard
- Worcestershire Sauce
HOW TO MAKE THEM
- Start by cooking the bacon. I like to dice it first, and then cook it but you can definitely cook it in strips and then chop it after. Remove the bacon, leaving the grease in the skillet.
- Cook the onions in the same skillet, in the bacon grease, until they are translucent.
- Combine the beans, molasses, brown sugar, ketchup, mustard and Worcestershire sauce. Add the cooked bacon and onion.
- Pour the whole mixture into a casserole dish and bake until it is heated through and bubbling.
TIPS AND TRICKS
Can’t find pork and beans? A commenter below mentioned that they have tried it with canned pinto beans and it worked out just fine!
These baked beans can also be made in the slow cooker. Instead of baking them, put it all in a slow cooker on low. I do like the flavor just a little bit better when they are baked, but the slow cooker is a great alternative when you need to make them earlier in the day.
You can also make them the night before, and then bake before serving. You may need to add on an extra 10-15 minutes if you are baking them straight from the refrigerator.
These also freeze very well! I like to double the batch and then freeze the leftovers. I find that it’s easiest to freeze in ziplock bags, but any freezer safe container should work.

Easy peasy! I poured the bacon pieces and grease through a strainer and only used a tablespoon of the bacon fat to sauté the onion to reduce the fat. The beans are delicious!

We used 1/4 cup molasses accidentally and it was perfect that way-plenty sweet with the addition of the brown sugar.

This recipe works fine with just regular canned beans if you don’t have pork and bean cans. Used up some leftover cans of pinto beans. The bacon adds enough richness on its own. Nice balance of flavor with molasses, ketchup, and mustard, together with Worcestershire sauce. If you want you can cook the bacon in larger pieces and cut it into smaller pieces afterwards instead of dicing it to begin with. That makes it a bit easier to handle than scooping out lots of little pieces. I actually over cooked it a little bit in the oven, but the result was still amazing. A little bit of extra brown bits did not diminish the end result. Some folks might actually like it that way. Thanks for a nice recipe!
