Full of flavor and made from spices that are probably already in your spice cabinet, this homemade Taco Seasoning Mix is so much better than a store bought mix. Plus, you get to control what goes into it!
I love making my own spice mixes – from Cajun Seasoning to Grilled Chicken Seasoning to Jamaican Jerk Seasoning to Pumpkin Pie Spice!
I started making my own spice mixtures years ago. I started to realize that not only is it easy because I keep a well stocked spice cabinet, but I like that I know exactly what is going into my mix. No preservatives or weird ingredients that don’t need to be there.
Plus, it’s easy to change things up! You can make it more or less spicy, add in some extra smokiness by using smoked paprika instead of regular paprika, or make it your own by adding in extra spices that you love.
It’s really so easy to make your own homemade taco seasoning that you’ll never want to buy it again!
Ingredients
Time to hit up your spice cabinet! All of these spices are ones that I keep on hand so it’s easy to mix up a batch whenever I need it.
- Chili Powder
- Ground Cumin
- Garlic Powder
- Onion Powder
- Dried Oregano
- Sea Salt
- Paprika
- Cayenne Pepper
How to Make Taco Seasoning
Place all of your spices in a bowl or a jar. (I like to use a jar so I can keep any extra in it for storage.)
Stir it all together, or if using a jar, place the lid on the jar and shake to combine.
Storage Instructions
Stored in an airtight container, this mix will last up to 6 months. But that is only if you are using fresh spices to start off with.
I like this recipe because it doesn’t make a lot, and I use it enough that I will go through it in a week or two. But if you do use a lot of taco seasoning, you can double or triple this recipe easily and it will be good for some time.
I like to just use a small jar, but you can also buy spice jars. Just make sure you keep it in a cool, preferably dark place (a cabinet works well) to make it last as long as possible.
