Sometimes the easiest recipes are the best recipes.
Especially when it comes to this honey butter.
Seriously – I could spread this on just about anything. And it only takes minutes to make.
One thing that sets this honey butter recipe apart from others is that it is so spreadable – even after being refrigerated! The worst thing is having to wait 30 minutes for the honey butter to soften enough for you to spread on your toast. But because the ratio of honey to butter is higher in this recipe, it is spreadable even right out of the refrigerator!
This is the perfect homemade condiment to keep in your refrigerator.
Ingredients
Butter: I like to use unsalted butter. Salted butter is great, but I feel like the saltiness is never consistent. I’d rather add my own salt. If you are using salted butter, taste the honey butter before adding any additional salt and then just add to taste.
Honey: I like to use a raw honey.
Powdered Sugar: The powdered sugar is important – not only for sweetness, but for texture.
Salt: A fine sea salt will be much better in this than table salt.
How to Make Honey Butter
- Place the softened butter in a bowl and whip for a few minutes to make it light and fluffy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
- Add in the honey, powdered sugar, and salt.
- Mix again until everything is combined and smooth. Serve!
Storing
You can leave this at room temperature as you are using it, but it will need to be stored in the refrigerator. It is best if it is in a container with a lid. As long as it is stored properly, it should last up to a month.
If you aren’t going to use it all, it does freeze well. Freeze it up to 2-3 months in an airtight container. Let it thaw in the refrigerator overnight.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes! Simply just add up to 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, depending on how much cinnamon flavor you want it to have.
Yes – this is definitely a sweeter version, but if you want it less sweet, cut back on the honey. It is still delicious with 1/4 cup of honey instead of 1/2 cup, it just will firm up a lot more in the refrigerator. If you do cut back on the amount of honey, you’ll need to let the honey butter sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes to make it spreadable.
You can totally make this by hand, (make sure your butter is soft!), but I prefer a mixer so that I can whip some air into the butter, making it super light. But if you don’t have a mixer, a bowl and a spatula will work just fine.
Ways to Use Honey Butter
- Use it on fresh rolls. My favorite are Parker House Rolls because they unfold perfectly for the honey butter.
- There is very little that is better than a slice of cornbread slathered in honey butter!
- Serve this honey butter up with some homemade buttermilk biscuits.
- Spread it on toast. It’s especially good on this potato bread.
- Use honey butter instead of regular butter on your muffins. It goes especially well with these bran muffins.
- Spread your pancakes or waffles with honey butter.

Meggles says
I was wondering with this honey butter… could it be made and stored? or does it need to be eaten right away because of the butter? I wish I could make it and give it away for christmas!
Deborah says
@Meggles, I would refrigerate it, just because it is butter, but I would just put a note on it to refrigerate.
Erika - The Teenage Taste says
Mmmmm…this could be dangerous. If I made this I would probably slather it on everything and anything. Yum!
Katrina says
I loved this! Yum!
Joanne says
There is nothing quite like honey butter spread on a piece of toast or over a pancake.
