I love a good, classic recipe. Especially when it’s an easy one.
Like these Ham and Cheese Sliders.
They are super easy to make, and are always a hit. This has been one of my go-to dinner recipes for a long time. Hands on time is minimal, and then they just go into the oven to bake. Dinnertime doesn’t get much easier!
And bonus – these are also great as a party appetizer! Perfect for sports, family parties, or on a buffet for a birthday party. It’s a winning recipe all around!
Ingredients
Make sure to scroll to the recipe card at the end of the post for the full recipe, including amounts and full instructions.
- Butter: I usually use unsalted butter because that is what I keep on hand, but you could definitely use salted butter here, as well.
- Mustard: Dijon mustard will give you the best flavor here.
- Poppy Seeds: The poppy seeds add great crunch. If a tablespoon is too much for you, feel free to cut it back.
- Dried Minced Onion: I love the little bits of crispy onion bits on top of these sandwiches! I usually keep a jar of dried minced onion on hand just for these sandwiches. If you don’t have any, though, you can use 1 teaspoon of onion powder.
- Worcestershire Sauce: This brings in flavor and depth for the butter sauce. Don’t skip it!
- Rolls: My favorite rolls to use for these sliders are Hawaiian rolls. The slight sweetness really works with the sweet, salty, ham. You can really use any rolls, though – even homemade if you want to go to the extra effort.
- Ham: I like to get ham that is shaved at the deli counter, but you can totally use any deli ham.
- Cheese: Again, I prefer cheese sliced at the deli counter, mostly so that I can have it thinly sliced. Although this time they did not slice it very thin and the sliders were still great!
How to Make Ham and Cheese Sliders
PHOTO 1: Make your butter sauce by combining the melted butter with the mustard, poppy seeds, dried minced onions, and Worcestershire sauce. Set this aside – you’ll need it in a few minutes.
PHOTO 2: Take your rolls and cut them in half horizontally, so that the tops and the bottoms are separated. I like to keep the rolls in one large slab still.
PHOTO 3 – 5: Now it’s time to layer. Place the bottom halves of the rolls in the bottom of your baking dish. (Note that my baking dish here is not a standard size – it’s a little smaller than a 9×13-inch dish. So your rolls will probably not fit as tightly – that’s ok!) Start layering with half of the ham, followed by the cheese, and then the remaining ham on top.
PHOTO 6: Place the top half of the rolls over the ham and cheese.
PHOTO 7: Spoon the butter sauce over the tops of the rolls. It may seem like a lot, and you will have some go down the sides and pool at the bottom. That’s totally ok – it will soak into the bottom buns as well. Just make sure you leave no dry spots on top. Cover the rolls with foil and bake for 20 minutes, then uncover and bake an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown.
Tips and Tricks
You need to bake the sliders covered to give the cheese time to melt. I know some people will leave the top rolls off and bake for a bit before adding the tops and the butter. But I prefer to just over the baking dish.
If you have a little bit of extra time, let the dish sit for 10 minutes after adding the butter mixture to give it time to really soak into the buns.
I think it’s a lot less work to assemble the whole thing as one big sandwich and then cut it into individual sliders to serve. But you can always assemble each slider individually and then bake.
I usually plan on 2-3 sliders per person if we are eating this as a meal.
Variations
Ham and Swiss cheese is definitely a popular combination for these sliders. But feel free to switch up the meat and the cheese. Here are some of our favorite combinations:
- Turkey and Cheddar
- Chicken and Provolone
- Roast Beef and Havarti
- Salami and Mozzarella

Ham and Cheese Sliders
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup melted butter
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1 tablespoon poppy seeds
- 1 tablespoon dried minced onion
- 1 1/2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 12 Hawaiian rolls or any other rolls
- 12 oz thinly sliced ham
- 8 oz thinly sliced Swiss cheese
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Spray a 9×13” baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter, mustard, poppy seeds, dried onion, and Worcestershire sauce.
- Take the rolls and cut them in half horizontally. (I like to leave them all together – it makes assembling the sandwiches much easier.) Place the bottom half of the rolls in the prepared baking dish.
- Top the rolls with half of the ham. Then layer on the cheese, followed by the remaining ham. Place the top of the rolls on top.
- Take your butter mixture and spoon it over the top, making sure that there aren’t any dry areas. Some of the butter will run to the bottom of the dish – that’s ok! It will soak into the bottom buns as well.
- Cover the dish loosely with foil and place in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and cook an additional 10-15 minutes, until the tops are toasted and the sandwiches are heated through.
- Let the sliders cool for a minute or two before slicing into individual sliders to serve.
