Super crispy and perfectly spiced, these Baked French Fries are the perfect snack or side dish. Forget the deep fryer, these homemade fries are just as good and are better for you!
These Baked French Fries make the perfect side for dinners like these Crispy Ranch Chicken Tenders or a good Blue Cheese Burger. Or make them for a great after school snack!
What do you do when you are craving some good french fries but you don’t want to leave the house? And when you don’t want to worry about the hassle of deep frying?
You make Baked French Fries at home!
These are super simple to make and are way better for you than something you’d pick up at the drive through. Crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside – you can’t beat that!
Ingredients
- Potatoes: I like to use russet potatoes because they get crispy on the outside, but are nice and fluffy on the inside.
- Oil: Extra virgin olive oil is my preferred oil for this, but you could also use vegetable oil, avocado oil, or another oil of your choice.
- Seasonings: The seasonings are important to give the french fries flavor. I use salt, smoked paprika, and garlic powder.
- Parsley: Adding a bit of something fresh at the end just elevates the fries. You can leave it off if you don’t have it, but I like the color and freshness.
How to Make Baked French Fries
- First, you want to cut the fries. I like to leave the skins on and make them about 1/4″ to 1/3″ inch thick.
- Place the potatoes in a bowl and cover with water. Let them sit for 10-15 minutes.
- Drain the potatoes and dry them as much as possible on a clean kitchen towel or paper towels.
- Place the dry potatoes in a bowl and add the oil and the seasonings. Stir to coat the fries completely.
- Place the fries in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes.
- Remove from the oven, carefully flip the potatoes over, and bake until they are nice and crispy. Toss with the parsley once they are finished baking.
Tips and Tricks
When cutting the potatoes, the most important thing is to try to make them as even in size as possible so that they cook evenly.
The bigger the fries are, the longer they will take to bake. Keep your eyes on the fries after you turn them – they can take anywhere from another 10 minutes to 20 or more minutes.
Soaking the potatoes in the water helps to get rid of some of the extra starch, which is how you get super crispy fries. So don’t skip this step if you want crispy fries!
Feel free to change up the seasonings. Make the french fries spicy with some chili powder, or add in some onion powder or cumin. Get creative!

Baked French Fries
Ingredients
- 2 lbs russet potatoes (about 2-3 potatoes)
- 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil divided
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- fresh chopped parsley
Instructions
- Scrub the potatoes clean, then cut into matchsticks about 1/4” each. Make sure to keep them as even as possible so that they will cook evenly.
- Fill a large bowl with water and add the potato sticks. Let them soak for 10-15 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 450ºF. Brush a large baking sheet with about 1/2 tablespoon of the olive oil.
- Drain the water and dry the potatoes as well as possible with a clean kitchen towel or paper towels. Place the potatoes in a clean bowl. (You can dry out the bowl that you used to soak them in for less dishes!) Drizzle the remaining olive oil over the potatoes. Sprinkle in the salt, paprika, and garlic powder. Toss to coat.
- Transfer the potatoes to the prepared baking sheet, spreading the fries out into a single layer.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Remove the sheet from the oven and carefully flip the fries over. Return to the oven and continue to bake until the fries are golden brown and crispy, about 10-20 more minutes. (The bake time will be more or less depending on the size that they were cut.)
- Remove from the oven and toss in the chopped parsley. Serve hot.

I love this trick!! I use this method to make french fries and 'hash brown' potatoes for breakfast burritos, or just plain old roasted potatoes!
