This Red Velvet Cheese Ball is the ultimate dip for red velvet lovers!! This sweet version of a cheese ball will have you going back for more!
I love an easy dessert! Just like this Red Velvet Cheese Ball, this Dump Cake Recipe is also made from a cake mix and done in a flash. And this Oatmeal Cake may not be made from a mix, but it’s so easy that it won’t matter!
Every once in awhile, an idea comes to me. An absolutely brilliant idea.
Now, I’m not one to toot my own horn, or to pat myself on the back, but I do believe that this one deserves a little of both.
Red. Velvet. Cheese. Ball.
Yep, you read that right. All the deliciousness of red velvet – plus the cream cheese frosting – all rolled into a ball and served with cookies.
I guess I can’t say the idea is completely original. I actually had the idea pop into my head while reading another blog post, about a peanut butter cheese ball.
But I looked and looked and looked some more, and nowhere online could I find another red velvet cheese ball. Usually, when I come up with an idea that I can’t find anywhere online, it’s because it’s not a good idea. Believe me – I’ve tried more than one thing before that I thought was originally a brilliant, original idea – only to learn my lesson. If you can’t find something online, most of the time it’s because it doesn’t work.
But this idea – it worked – as well as I was hoping for.
The best way I thought to get that red velvet flavor and color while keeping the texture of the cheese ball was to use a cake mix. It only uses part of the cake mix, so feel free to double the recipe (especially if you are feeding a crowd!) or you can even make cake mix cookies with the other half. My husband loved this so much that he ate almost half of it himself!! He said the only thing that would make it better would be to add in more chocolate chips, mixed throughout – so that is always another option as well.
Not only would this great for Valentine’s Day, but I’m sure it would be a hit at your Super Bowl party this weekend, too!
And if you love this idea, you can also try my Cannoli Cheese Ball!

Red Velvet Cheese Ball
Ingredients
- 8 ounces cream cheese at room temperature
- 1/2 cup butter at room temperature
- 1 1/2 cups red velvet cake mix dry
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips
- assorted cookies and crackers my favorite was Vanilla Wafers
Instructions
- In the bowl of a stand mixer, beat the cream cheese and butter until smooth. Add in the red velvet cake mix, the powdered sugar and the brown sugar. Beat until smooth and combined.
- Turn the mixture out onto a piece of plastic wrap. Wrap up into a ball and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
- Put the chocolate chips on a plate or in a shallow dish. Remove the cheese ball from the refrigerator and unwrap. Roll in the chocolate chips. (This might get messy!) Place on a serving plate and serve with cookies or graham crackers.

My only concern is that it uses cake mix which has raw flour… isn’t that unsafe?
Deborah says
@Missy S, I had never even heard that raw flour is unsafe, but I looked it up and it looks like there is a small chance that it can be contaminated. I have never had a problem, and I think that cake mixes are probably processed enough that there is no worry, but if you are concerned, I’d skip this one.
steph says
I dont have a stand mixer. I have a hand held electric mixer. Will this work as well??
Deborah says
@steph, it might get a little too thick for a hand mixer. If it does, I’d just mix it with a wooden spoon – you should be just fine!

I have been meaning to leave you a comment for a couple of weeks now. I had a Kentucky Derby/Cinco de Mayo BBQ to go to a couple weekends ago and I made this cheese ball. Actually, I made 2. One to stay home so my family could try and one to take to the BBQ.
It was outrageously good and it was a HUGE HIT at the BBQ. People went crazy over it. I served Nilla Wafers with it and the whole thing was devoured within a couple of hours. The one that I left at home was gone within 2 days.
I did mix some chocolate chips in with the mixture as well as rolling the outside with them and I’m glad I did. Thank you so much for this recipe. It is very special and I can’t wait to bring it to parties in the future. 🙂
Deborah says
@Amanda, I’m so glad it was such a hit! And good thinking on making a second one to keep at home!
Rashonda says
Made this for a party this weekend……AMAZING…!!! Everyone kept asking how did I come up with the recipe, and I couldn’t take credit. I also made one using carrot cake mix and rolled it in chopped walnuts and used gingersnaps for dipping. It was great!
Deborah says
@Rashonda, I’m so glad it was a hit, and I’m going to have to try the carrot cake version – sounds amazing!!

I just wanted to drop by and let you know that I found this recipe on Pinterest, and am a HUGE sucker for anything red velvet. I made this for a work party and I will tell you, I have never had more compliments and requests for a recipe before. This is BEYOND good. Thanks for sharing it!!! PS – I took your advice and added the choc chips in with the mixture. Sooo yummy!
Mallory says
This looks so good. I’m making it soon. How do u think it would turn out if I mixed chocolate chips throughout and then rolled it in a white chocolate and chocolate chip mixture? Or should I just stick to only chocolate?
Deborah says
@Mallory, I’ve heard that others have rolled it in white chocolate chips and liked it, but I’ve only had it with the chocolate chips. If you do try, please let me know how you like it! 🙂
Lauren Ellison says
I made this around Super Bowl time and it was the biggest hit ever. So many people ask me for the instructions and I always copy and paste the link to here.
I made just one variation. I chopped up raspberry hershey kisses and mixed them with the choco chips then rolled it in that. The raspberry added SOOOO much to the flavor. Didn’t look as pretty as whole chips but it was rediculously good. (Any raspberry chocolate would work, I’m sure)
I personally liked it the best with chocolate animal crackers. Was delish with the chocolate. I’ve pinned this too!
GREAT JOB!!!
Deborah says
@Lauren Ellison, so glad it was a hit, and the raspberry sounds amazing!!
amy says
can you use any cake mix?
Deborah says
@amy, I’ve only tried it with red velvet, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work with any cake mix!

When I first saw this on Pinterest I was in complete awe, looks amazing!!! 🙂
Sara Jean says
I made this and the Red Velvet Gooey Butter Cookies last weekend and they were both OUT OF THIS WORLD! I got so many compliments and I just think the presentation of the cheese ball is striking and beautiful–I love it! I will definitely be making more of your recipes! PS–My favorite cookie for dipping was the Nilla Wafer as well, but I could just eat it by the spoonful too! I definitely agree with your hubby about the chocolate chips! 🙂
Deborah says
@Sara Jean, I’m so glad they were both a hit!!
Lauren says
I am making this right now!
However, I’m making mini-balls for individual cupcake wrappers. So I have the entire bowl sitting in the fridge and when I get home from work tonight, I’ll be putting the chips on them and then …. probably eat over 50% of them before I bring them with me tomorrow and Wednesday 🙂
Jessy says
Anyone try any other type of cookie? I like nilla wafers, just curious…
Deborah says
@Jessy, I tried graham crackers as well and liked them, although I did like the nilla wafers the best.
Erin says
I just ran to Wal-Mart and picked up all of the ingredients. It was so easy and I could have just eaten the batter, pre-ball form, all day! Thank you (and Pinterest)!
Allison says
So did you cook the cake or just use the dry mix?
Deborah says
@Allison, it’s just the dry mix.
