This Pizza Grilled Cheese has all of your favorite pepperoni pizza flavors all wrapped up in a quick and easy grilled cheese sandwich. Perfect for lunch or for when you need an easy dinner, the kids and adults will both go crazy over this one.
Sandwiches are such a great go-to for easy dinners or lunches. You can also try these Monte Cristo Sandwiches, this Italian Sub, or this Three Cheese Grilled Cheese with Tomato.
I will never turn down a good grilled cheese sandwich.
Especially if it’s loaded with all the best pizza flavors.
Now, you could just throw on some cheese and pepperoni and call it good, but believe me when I say that this is the ultimate pizza grilled cheese sandwich. It’s like two slices of parmesan crusted garlic bread filled with melty cheese, sauce, and of course – pepperoni.
My husband was a skeptic at first, but after one bite, he couldn’t get enough!
Ingredients
Make sure to check out the recipe card at the bottom of this post for full ingredients, amounts, and instructions.
- Butter: You can either use salted or unsalted butter. The parmesan brings in some saltiness, but this is one recipe where I do like some extra salt. But it’s all personal preference.
- Italian Seasoning: I like to rub the Italian seasoning lightly between my fingers to release the oils and give it more flavor.
- Garlic Powder: I like to use garlic powder instead of fresh garlic because the fresh garlic tends to burn.
- Parmesan Cheese: I like to use freshly grated parmesan for the best flavor. You’ll want to grate it as finely as possible, though.
- Bread: You can really use any bread you want, but I just used a regular white bread.
- Mozzarella: You will have the best results if you use a low-moisture mozzarella and shred it yourself.
- Pizza Sauce: If I have any leftover homemade pizza sauce, I like to use that. But you can also use store bought pizza sauce.
- Pepperoni: You could also leave the pepperoni out if you aren’t a fan, and you still get lots of pizza flavor.
How to Make Pizza Grilled Cheese
STEP 1: Place the softened butter in a small bowl and mash it around a bit to make sure it’s nice and soft.
STEP 2: Add the Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and parmesan cheese to the butter and stir it all together until evenly combined.
STEP 3: I like to separate my bread into 4 sandwiches, then spread the butter mixture on the outsides of each slice of bread.
STEP 4: Turn those over, and spread the inside of each piece of bread with the pizza sauce.
STEP 5: Now divide your cheese evenly. I like to have some cheese on each side to act as the glue.
STEP 6: Add the pepperoni to one side of each sandwich, then carefully turn the bread over on top of the pepperoni to create your four sandwiches.
STEP 7: Heat a skillet over medium to medium-low heat. You want these to cook slowly so that the cheese has time to melt. Add as many as you can fit in your skillet (I can only fit 3 at a time) and cook until the bottom is toasted.
STEP 8: Flip the sandwich and cook until the second side is toasted. If needed, you can place a lid on the skillet to ensure that the cheese melts.
Tips and Tricks
- I also love to use French bread to make these sandwiches. Just make sure that the bread is not too thick or else the cheese won’t get warm enough to melt.
- Mini pepperoni makes this even easier to eat, but regular pepperoni definitely works.
- You can also go crazy and use any of your favorite pizza toppings – sausage, peppers, mushrooms – just don’t add so much that your sandwich falls apart.
- If you do have any leftover, store them covered in the refrigerator. I would suggest reheating in a skillet with a lid, or in an air fryer.

Pizza Grilled Cheese
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup butter softened
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons finely grated parmesan cheese
- 8 slices bread
- 6-8 shredded mozzarella
- 1/2 cup pizza sauce
- 2 oz pepperoni slices
Instructions
- In a small bowl, stir the butter to soften it and smooth it out. Add the Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and parmesan cheese. Stir to combine.
- Spread the butter mixture on one side of each slice of bread. Place the bread butter side down on a cutting board.
- Divide the pizza sauce evenly, spreading on the sides of the bread without the butter. Top each piece with cheese. Divide the pepperoni between 4 of the slices, then carefully turn the sides without the pepperoni on them over to create 4 sandwiches with the butter on the outsides.
- Heat a large skillet over medium low heat and add as many sandwiches as will fit. (I usually can fit 3 in a 12-inch skillet.) Cook until the bottom is golden brown, about 4 minutes, then carefully flip and cook the second side. If needed, place a lid on the pan so that the cheese will melt.
- Serve the sandwiches warm.

I go crazy without a plan or a grocery list! I spiral out of control and end up eating sushi for dinner. Delicious but expensive. Next time I'm making these paninis. They look excellent.

Ahh, I used to do that all the time, always running to the grocery store after classes having just decided on what to eat. But good things come from unexpected places =). I haven't had pizza or sandwiches in a while, so I may just have to give this a go; thanks for sharing!
I hope your upcoming week goes smoother =).
