I love a good mocktail. And you can’t really talk about mocktails without mentioning the most famous of them all:
The Shirley Temple.
While there are a few stories of its origin, the most popular is that it was created by a bartender at a restaurant for the child actress Shirley Temple.
And just like there are many different origin stories, there are many different versions of what actually goes into a Shirley Temple.
But since I’m all about simplicity, we’re keeping it super simple here today, with one of the most classic renditions of this famous family friendly drink.
Ingredients
You only need 3 ingredients!
- Grenadine: This is syrup made for cocktails, made from pomegranates. It’s pretty easy to find at most grocery stores, (just look in the section with other drink mixers.) You can also sub in pomegranate juice.
- Lemon Lime Soda: Many people will dispute if the base of this drink is lemon lime soda or ginger ale. Both can be used, but we usually stick with lemon lime soda.
- Maraschino Cherries: You can technically leave these off, but a Shirley Temple drink never looks quite right without them.
How to Make a Shirley Temple
Step 1: Fill your glass with ice. Pebble ice is my favorite for this drink.
Step 2: Pour in 1 ounce of grenadine.
Step 3: Pour 8 ounces of soda into the glass.
Step 4: Top with 1 or 2 maraschino cherries.
Tips and Tricks
I think these are easiest to make one at a time. But if you are serving a lot of people, you can make a whole pitcher full.
In a pinch, you can use juice from the maraschino cherry jar instead of grenadine. It will give you the pretty pink drink, but the flavor will be a little different.
Apparently, in Canada, they add orange juice to their Shirley temples, as well!
