Chicken wings don’t get easier than these Slow Cooker Barbecue Chicken Wings! A simple homemade barbecue sauce covers chicken wings that are slow cooked for an easy dinner or appetizer.
Show some more wing love with these chicken wing recipes: Chipotle Orange Chicken Wings (I’m always a sucker for the sweet/spicy combo), Maple Mustard Grilled Chicken Wings (perfect for grilling season!), or these Sweet Thai Chicken Wings (I love the Thai flavors in this recipe!)
While they are always popular for holidays, watching sports, or as a New Years appetizer, chicken wings are just good all year long. We don’t need an excuse to make up a batch at any time in our house!
And it doesn’t get easier than these Slow Cooker Barbecue Chicken Wings. You start with a homemade barbecue sauce – but don’t worry, it only takes minutes to mix together! Pour that over your wings in a slow cooker, then press the on button. A quick broil in the oven at the end gives them a nice crisp.
If you’ve ever been intimidated by making wings at home, this is the recipe you need to try. While I love them cooked all kinds of different ways, these crock pot wings are right up there at the top of my favorites!
Tips for making these wings in the crock pot
- One thing to note on these Slow Cooker Barbecue Chicken Wings – the chili sauce in the ingredient list is not a spicy sauce. I once made the mistake of using sriracha in a recipe instead of chili sauce, and the end result was not so pretty. So don’t make that same mistake that I did.
- Also, if you are feeling really lazy or short on time, you can definitely skip the last step to thicken the sauce and broil the wings, but I highly recommend doing it. It does make the recipe a little bit more work, but that last step really makes a big difference.
- You can use a bottled barbecue sauce, but why would you when it’s so easy to make this one!
- You can use frozen chicken wings, but I don’t recommend it. The frozen wings are coated with a layer of ice, and that ice creates extra moisture in the slow cooker. I would suggest thawing the wings first. But if you don’t have time for that and you just want to cook them from frozen, you’ll want to make sure you thicken the sauce after the wings are finished in the slow cooker.
The Fix-It and Forget-It Cookbook
The recipe for these Slow Cooker Barbecue Chicken Wings comes from a new cookbook to my collection – Fix-It and Forget-It Cookbook: Revised and Updated. This book contains 700 slow cooker recipes. That is definitely a lot! I really love that it has a huge selection of slow cooker recipes – soups, main dishes, other appetizers, vegetables, and of course, dessert. The main dish section is definitely the largest, but I love that there is so much variety. I do have to mention that there are a large number of recipes that call for a canned ingredient, mostly canned cream of something soups. So if you aren’t a fan of that, I would take that into consideration.

Slow Cooker Barbecue Chicken Wings
Ingredients
- 5 lbs chicken wings separated at the joint, tips removed
- 12- oz bottle chili sauce
- 1/3 cup lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons molasses
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 2 teaspoons chili powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon hot pepper sauce
- dash garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons water
Instructions
- Spray a slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray. Place the wings in the bottom of the slow cooker.
- In a bowl, combine the chili sauce, lemon juice, molasses, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, salt, hot pepper sauce and garlic powder. Pour over the wings in the slow cooker.
- Cook on low for 4-5 hours, until the wings are tender.
- Remove the wings from the slow cooker and place on a foil lined baking sheet. Transfer the liquid from the slow cooker to a pot, and place over high heat. Bring to a boil. In a small bowl, combine the cornstarch and water. Add to the boiling liquid and stir in. Cook, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened.
- Turn on the broiler.
- Baste the tops of the wings with the thickened barbecue sauce. Place in the oven under the broiler until the tops are crisped and browned, just a couple minutes. (Make sure to keep an eye on them, as they will cook quickly.)
