This Steak Stir Fry Recipe with Peppers is the perfect dinner recipe – whether you are making it ahead or just looking for an easy dinner idea. We served this steak stir fry recipe over rice, but you could always do brown rice or quinoa to make it a little healthier.
The sauce on this recipe has a bit of orange zest, which I was actually quite excited about. Especially once I tasted it. That orange zest brings the most delicious brightness to the dish. It definitely adds a good punch of orange flavor, so if you aren’t a fan of orange, I would suggest leaving it out. But I absolutely loved the flavor it brought to the dish.
I would say I’m pretty much obsessed with this Steak Stir Fry Recipe with Peppers!!
Ingredients
- Rice Vinegar: You will want to use unseasoned rice vinegar. If you are looking for a substitute, try apple cider vinegar.
- Soy Sauce: I like to use a low sodium soy sauce.
- Orange Zest: This really adds so much fresh flavor and makes this dish unique from others.
- Sugar: The sugar brings in a little bit of sweetness, and it also helps to form the sticky sauce.
- Cornstarch: You’ll use the cornstarch in both the sauce and to cook the steak. It will help to thicken up the sauce and to help brown up the steak.
- Flank Steak: Flank steak is the best choice for meat here, but you could also use a skirt steak, flat iron steak, or sirloin steak.
- Salt and Pepper: It’s always very important to season – don’t forget the salt and pepper!
- Oil: This is for cooking the steak. The recipe calls for vegetable oil, but feel free to swap in another oil with a high smoke point.
- Onion, Bell Peppers, and Garlic: These are your stir fry veggies. I like that this is kept pretty simple in this recipe, but you could always throw in some other veggies of your choice, like broccoli, snow peas, or mushrooms.
- Ginger: Fresh ginger is going to give you the best flavor here.
- Cilantro: The cilantro is just added to the final serving for flavor and freshness – if you aren’t a fan, you can leave it off.
- Rice: We love to serve this over rice. Feel free to serve over noodles, or swap in cauliflower rice for a lower carb option.
How to Make Steak Stir Fry with Peppers
This meal comes together pretty quickly once you start cooking, so make sure to have everything prepped before you start.
- Start by combining the rice vinegar, soy sauce, orange zest, sugar, and part of the cornstarch in a small bowl. Set this aside.
- In another bowl, season the sliced steak with salt and pepper, then add the remaining cornstarch and stir to coat the steak.
- Place the wok or the skillet over high heat and add the oil. Working in batches, add the steak to the wok and cook until browned – but you aren’t trying to cook it all the way through. This should take about 2 minutes per batch. Transfer the meat to a plate.
- To the wok, add the onion, peppers, garlic and ginger. Stir fry until the vegetables are tender, about 5 minutes.
- Add the steak back into the wok and cook for 1 more minute.
- Pour the sauce over the mixture and continue to cook until the sauce is thickened, about 2-3 minutes. It should all go fairly quickly!
- Serve the steak and vegetables over rice and garnish with fresh cilantro.
