These easy Sweet and Sour Meatball Skewers are made from frozen meatballs that are combined with fresh peppers and basted with an easy sweet and sour sauce.
Sweet and Sour is a favorite flavor combo around here. If you love it, as well, try these Sweet and Sour Meatballs or this Sweet and Sour Chicken.
These Sweet and Sour Meatball Skewers are so super simple and a great recipe to turn to when you don’t know what to have for dinner and you don’t want a lot of effort. Frozen meatballs and sweet peppers are threaded onto skewers and then basted with a simple 2-ingredient sweet and sour sauce. I love to keep frozen meatballs on hand just for recipes like this one!
Ingredients
Meatballs: You just need frozen meatballs that have been thawed. Easy as that! You can always use homemade meatballs, as well. You’ll just want to make sure that they are firm enough to hold when put on the skewer.
Peppers: I like to use a mix of red and green bell peppers, but really – any color will work!
Sauce: This is a super simple glaze made from apricot jam and barbecue sauce. You can always make your own sweet and sour sauce and use that, though!

How to Make Sweet and Sour Meatballs
PREP: Thread the meatballs and the peppers onto skewers, alternating them as you go. You should have enough to make 8 skewers unless they are bigger or smaller.
GRILL: Place the skewers on a grill that has been preheated to medium-high.
BASTE: Mix together the apricot jam and the barbecue sauce and baste the skewers as they are grilling. Once you turn the skewers, baste again.

Per my husband, ‘crazy good’ and he wants it again. Instead of grilling, I did low/slow in oven at 325 for about an hour. Flipped / basted every 10-15 minutes, so doubled the sauce. Also added one chopped onion to the skewers.
Deborah says
What a great idea to do it in the oven! I’m so glad it was a hit 🙂

Hi Deborah,
If I”m going to make meatballs from scratch (I keep kosher and can’t get frozen eatballs where I live) should they be browned in a pan before I skewer them?
Deborah says
Yes – I would brown them first so that they cook through easier and so that they don’t fall apart.
