So, have you all realized how obsessed I am with taco flavors? There is taco pizza. And taco dogs.
And now – Burgers.
I haven’t always been comfortable making burgers. They were one of those things that were just intimidating to me. But now, I can’t seem to make them often enough. In fact, they have become one of my go-to meals for weeknights.
This burger here – well, it’s got to be at the top of my current favorite burgers list. Not only does it have taco seasoning in the burger, but it also has crushed up corn chips. That is my secret ingredient that really brings in that taco flavor and sets these apart from so many other burgers.
If you are craving a little bit of that Tex-Mex flavor, these burgers are your answer!
Ingredients
- Ground Beef: I like to use at least a 90/10 blend of ground beef, but ideally 80/20. The fat will add great flavor and will leave you with moist burgers that don’t dry out easily.
- Tortilla Chips: Yes, this is not your typical burger ingredient, but if you really want that taco flavor, crushed up tortilla chips will give it to you. You will measure the chips once they are crushed.
- Taco Seasoning: I like to use my homemade taco seasoning blend. But you could always use store bought.
- Onion: By using grated onion, you get the onion flavor without chunks of onion.
- Worcestershire Sauce: This adds lots of depth to the flavors.
- Salt and Pepper: It’s super important to season to taste with salt and pepper. If you are using a store bought taco seasoning, you may need less salt. I like things on the salty side, so I tend to add more. But seasoning with salt and pepper can really elevate the flavors.
- Cheese: I like to use cheddar-jack but you could always use cheddar or American. Or add some spice with pepper jack.
- Buns: I like to use a soft bun, but you can always use your favorite here.
- Toppings: I talk more about my favorite toppings below.
How to Make Taco Burgers
STEP 1: Add all of your burger ingredients to a large bowl. Mix them together until fully combined.
STEP 2: Form the mixture into 4 even patties. I like to make them thinner in the center and thicker around the edges.
STEP 3: Heat a grill or a pan on the stove. These are really delicious on a grill, but I do love to also cook the on a cast iron skillet.
STEP 4: Cook the burgers for about 5 minutes, then turn them over. Add a slice of cheese to the top of each burger, then continue to cook until your desired doneness and the cheese is melted.
Tips and Tricks
I like to mix the burger ingredients together with my hands. I find that it’s the easiest way to get everything evenly combined without over-mixing. And then you can form the patties by hand, as well.
I like to only flip my burgers once. Mostly because I like to make sure they have a nice crust on the outside.
You also never want squeeze on them, squeezing out any juices.
For best results, you can use an instant read thermometer to tell when your burgers are done.
How to Serve Taco Burgers
You can really get creative with the toppings on these burgers. I tend to stick with sour cream, salsa, lettuce and tomatoes. But guacamole, onions, or cilantro would be delicious, as well.
If you are looking for things to serve on the side, try this Cilantro Lime Rice, Pinto Beans, or Mexican Corn Salad.

Taco Burgers
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 cup crushed tortilla chips
- 3 tablespoons taco seasoning
- 2 tablespoons grated onion
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 4 slices cheddar jack cheese
- 4 hamburger buns
- Lettuce, tomato, sour cream and salsa for topping
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, tortilla chips, taco seasoning, onion, and Worcestershire sauce.
- Combine the mixture until all of the ingredients are evenly mixed. I find that this is easiest to do with my hands. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and form each portion into a patty. Season the patties with salt and pepper on both sides.
- Preheat a gas or charcoal grill over medium heat, or preheat a pan on the stove if cooking inside.
- Place the patties on the grill (or on the pan) and cook for 5 minutes. Turn the patty over, add a slice of cheese to each, and continue to cook until you reach your desired doneness.
- To serve, spread about 1 tablespoon of sour cream on each bottom bun. Add the cooked patty, then top with lettuce, tomato, and salsa. Add the top bun and serve.
